Breathtaking Architecture

The history of Milan is long and varied. With domination by Romans, Lombards, Germans and Austrians all leaving their marks after Celts originally settled the area. The architectural history follows along these lines as well and stunning examples of everything from Roman ruins through Medieval to modern architecture are spread throughout the city. You may be staying in a thoroughly modern hotel or apartment in Milan, but the surrounding buildings offer nearly every type of architecture.
  • One of the most outstanding examples of Renaissance architecture is the Sforza Castle. An imposing structure in the very center of the city, set off by parks and the wonderful Castello Fountain. It takes at least an hour or two to walk around and through the castle and its grounds at a leisurely pace so plan accordingly. Its central location makes it convenient to almost all lodging in Milan.

  • The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is not only home to some of the best shopping in Milan but is also worthy of all its received praise as a structure. Built to celebrate the first king after Italy was united as a country in 1861 the structure connects La Scala with the Piazza del Duomo and has spawned imitators around the globe.

  • Entering into the Art Nouveau movement, Sommaruga and his contemporaries are well represented around the city. The Palazzo Castiglioni is one of the most representative structures, but examples are abundant.

  • The train station in Milan is a fabulous example of a combination of practicality and beauty united.

  • Milan’s Duomo is the fourth largest in the world and the most stunning example of Gothic architecture in all of Italy. It is also arguably one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Even those who do not normally have an appreciation for architecture will ooh and ahh over the Duomo.
