South of the Arno
When thumbing through many guidebooks or websites about Florence you often find very little about what to do and where to go on
the south side of the Arno. In times long past portions of the southern part of the city were unsavory, but that is no longer true. If you have managed to reserve a
holiday apartment in Florence that is close to the river exploring the quieter, less crowded portion of the city can be incredibly relaxing.
- In addition to the stunning and popular Boboli Gardens that are on the south side of the river there is also a very unique Giardino Sonoro nearby. Children generally enjoy this as well. The garden is full of musical devices placed in trees and landscaping. Extremely soothing after a day among crowds.
- The walk from Palazzo Pitti to Piazza Santo Spirito is home to a vast number of artisans and artists. Everything from handmade jewelry to paintings and crafts is born here. Many of the shops have been owned by the same families for generations.
- Around Porta San Frediano you will find not only the Piazzas of Carmine and Santo Spirito, but an amazing collection of great local restaurants that cater to residents and not to tourists. The quality of the food is amazing for the prices and arriving early will almost always assure you of a table.
- Getting out of the confines of your lodging in Florence, away from the crowds and into an open space with great views is easy. Just head five minutes west of San Frediano to Monte Oliveto. A beautiful, untamed place rising over the city and offering views of the city and river.
